When I moved from Ethiopia to Germany 20 years ago, one thing I immediately missed was really good coffee like I know from my homeland. The coffee I got in Germany simply couldn’t be compared in terms of taste and quality. I then began to research and visited local coffee farmers on my next visit to Ethiopia. Coffee cultivation has a very long tradition in Ethiopia. After all, Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and it has been growing wild in the rainforests here for thousands of years. The coffee farmers are very poor people because they harvest the coffee from the rainforests by hand according to the old tradition and then sell the coffee on their doorsteps. Wholesalers or industrial coffee growers prefer to plant the coffee in fields and keep it alive artificially using pesticides and chemicals (coffee trees usually die if they have no shade) because this produces much more yield. The coffee farmers receive the same return from the government for their hand-harvested high-quality wild coffee, which is very healthy and tastes better, as for industrially produced coffee, because there was no dedicated market for the high-quality coffee.
